Halloo,
The first thing I want to do before I continue this write-up is to ask what your definition of a decent person is. Who do you consider to be a decent person?
As usual, different people will have different opinions on this. I am firm though in my own opinion of individuals I considered being decent.
My definition is simple. A decent person is someone who knows that he or she is human first before anything else. A Human before Religion, Race, Sex, Colour, Tribe, Sexual orientation, Wealth, Status, Education, name it…
For me, once any individual loses sight of this sequence, things start going horribly wrong. I strongly believe that most of the problems we have in the world come from most of us forgetting that before anything we are human first. Humanity has been replaced by different categorization.

You will find it hard to discriminate, hate or harm another human if you can’t segregate the person in your mind. How hard can that be? Just see a person, not their status, not their wealth or lack of wealth, not who they know, not which family they come from, not the type of job they do. Just see another human being like yourself with the same colour of blood flowing in your veins.
The killing of a group of people by some people can be looked at with a laissez-faire attitude and just accepted as one of those things. Even animals mourn their dead. We humans are supposed to be superior and with more feelings than animals. But when it comes to treating our fellow human beings right, we are found wanting. Why is that?
I see a lot of people saying what people want to hear. Modifying their behaviour according to one principle or the other. Just to be thought to be a nice or decent person. All these don’t move me one way or another. Just treat everyone with decency. Yes, even those you don’t like.
Some people will look down on total strangers, judging them by their own perceived level of importance. These empty barrels are mostly nothing, but can only elevate themselves by making others feel inferior.
The mind games they play, especially on vulnerable people are just mind-boggling. I am not sure if these people do not know that some of their actions are considered bullying. Or they know and just don’t care.
A quick guide is to always ask oneself ‘If this was done to me, how will I feel?’ Your honest answer to this might help you in checking yourself before you do something.
I really can’t stand anybody who thinks that due to some reason or another they have the right to attack a fellow human being, walk all over people, talk to them anyhow, and make them feel small. I am sorry, I am yet to hear of any reason that can justify this. Please feel free to prove me wrong in the comment section below.
To me you can be as old as Methuselah, you can be richer than Bill Gates, and you can rival the Kardashians in fashion and makeup. You are useless and pointless if your fellow human beings are not treated with consideration by you.
When you think deeply about it, you will see that to be decent can’t be that hard. Just know that! You can’t pick and choose when it comes to decency. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated.
