Halloo,

If you have ever laid your hands on Authentic African Raw Shea Butter you will agree with me that this natural raw body butter can rival many expensive Moisturisers in the market.

People with dry skin, especially those of us living in cold countries, can bear witness to this, wintertime is really tough on dry skin. I managed my skin by getting extra moisture and protection from Raw Shea Butter. I use it on its own sometimes, but most of the times I used it with other ingredients to make whipped body butter.

I am talking about Raw(Unrefined) Shea Butter here. There are Shea Butter sold as refined. This has been mixed with other ingredients to make it softer or to remove the smell.

Over-processed Shea Butter
Over-processed Shea Butter

The problem is most of the retailers and shops selling Raw Shea butter are not selling the authentic one. Especially in Europe, some of the raw shea butter being sold are so white in colour, hard and crispy, above all with no earthy smell that raw Shea butter is known for.

Anybody who is not familiar with what real Shea butter is may be fooled by this. But a true African will know what real Shea butter look like, feel like, and smell like. Most of this so-called raw shea butter is so hard that it will not absorb into the skin on application, unlike Authentic raw Shea butter that gets absorbed quickly into the skin and melts at body temperature.

My theory is that this so-called unrefined Shea butter has been over-processed. You might think there is no danger in that, but the amazing benefits that Shea butter is known for and widely recommended for will be greatly diminished with this over-processing.

The more processed, the less effective. The natural properties, essential minerals and vitamins will either be lost or greatly reduced.

Authentic Raw Shea Butter should be either yellow or ivory in colour. It should be soft like butter, even if it appears hard, gentle pressure should make a dent. It should smell earthy, not the most pleasant smell I admit, but this is the smell of original raw Shea butter.

African Shea Butter comes from the natural fat obtained from the Karite tree grown in West and Central Africa. It is very rich in unsaturated fats and other properties. No wonder shea butter is considered a skin superfood due to it being naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F.

Raw African Shea Butter should softens, smooths, hydrates, and heal the skin and hair. This is because shea butter contains stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, vitamin E, beta carotin, allantoin, it is high in essential fatty acid, and a great source of Vitamin A.

Raw Shea Butter is very natural; made by hands without any harmful chemicals. It is so gentle that delicate and sensitive skin is safe using it. That is why it is popularly used on newborn babies, in fact, it is a popular barrier cream in preventing nappy rash.

Authentic Raw Shea Butter should be soft, though due to the weather, the texture may vary from time to time. But it should still be usable as body cream by itself. Many people prefer mixing it with other kinds of raw butter and natural oils to make their own skincare products.

This may not be a big deal to many people, which is fine. I guess I am talking to folks who like me, wants to know exactly what is going into their body. Be careful!
