What are your plans when this Covid-19 Lock-down is finally over? Some of us will not have our old jobs to go back to. It, really, is the fact. Maybe this is our chance to build ourselves up for career progression, new career, career change, increase our chances of getting new employment, or simply to develop ourselves.

This is the time to either start learning the skills needed, research into how you can go about acquiring these skills, or make plans for learning when the lockdown is lifted. In short, this is the time to reflect and take bold steps.

There are so many skills that can be learned online, why not take advantage of that right now? Many people, especially women, find it impossible to commit to going to classrooms to learn because of their demanding lifestyle of raising a young family. I know about it; the non-stop going up and down for school runs, doctors appointment, swimming classes, dancing classes, basketball practice, football classes, self-defence classes. Endless lists of things to do.

Now we are all housebound, it’s time to sit down and plan for the future. Soon we will all be able to go out and life will continue. Our children will get older and raising them will get easier and less time demanding. You need to be prepared to start your own life too.

Most of us already have a First Degree in one field or another, but years of not doing anything has made these qualifications almost redundant. Some don’t have any third-level education and desire it. Whatever the circumstances, the most important is to know what you want to do and set about getting the skills needed.

We can all sit on Social Media all day going from one page to another, nothing wrong in that. But remember to check in with yourself and ask yourself if that is really what your life is going to be about? Entertain yourself by all means, but all day entertainment is a bit too much, don’t you think so?

Some of these online skill tutorials are free or cost next to nothing. Some only take a few weeks to learn. Why not take advantage of them? Even if you pick a particular skill and decide to only watch free tutorials on YouTube, you will gain a lot.

Employers want skills that are useful and can be demonstrated. So having a long list of skills you can’t demonstrate on your resume no longer works. To have an edge over other applicants you have to show your knowledge of these skills. Increase your potential and employability by using this period in history to learn new skills.
