Halloo,
There is no doubt in my mind that we live in a masculine world. Many people all over the globe are aware of this. It is a concern that many people share and are working tirelessly to change. Kudos to all these great people.
Feminism for me is the identity that I take to tell the world that females are humans, not subhumans to the males. To tell everyone who cares to listen that females have the same rights as males to live their lives as they choose. No need for the males to make decisions for them.
Many females, even some males, agree with me on this. Equality is a big issue that many of us are fighting for in different ways. We all want a world where women and girls are given the same opportunities as their male counterparts without restrictions.
Most of the people fighting tirelessly for women rights will quickly points out to you that they are not FEMINISTS!. Some even consider this an insult to be refer to as a feminist. Why?
The general idea is that they are fighting for equal rights for everyone not just females. That they are practicing humanism not feminism. Admirable!
No matter what title you decide to give equal rights, it is all good in my opinion. Call it feminism, womanism, equalism, or humanism. It is all semantics. Once we all agree that no human being should be made to play second fiddle to another because of some weird beliefs, I am with you all the way.
I am unashamedly a feminist. I embrace feminism boldly. I have no problem stating this openly.
Now, I am aware that some people are using the word feminism for their ugly movement of waging war against all men. This is why some people are disassociating themselves from feminism. I know all these and still call myself a feminist.

I openly call myself a feminist because I am a strong believer in giving my own definition to what I do. I never let anybody define things for me. Which to me is the whole point of feminism.
Whenever I decide to do anything I don’t just follow all the rules associated with that thing. I follow the rules that I believe in. I have an A-la-carte approach to everything. I pick and choose. I have had numerous heated debates about this with so many people on this approach. I think we shouldn’t be bound by stifling rules, especially those we don’t believe in but forced on us by culture, society, or religion.
So, I have no problem calling myself a feminist because I have my own solid definition of what a feminist is. I grew up seeing many women forced to become a shadow of themselves because of society pressure. I see girls not being given a fighting chance to become something great no matter their potentials just because of their gender. I witness many many situations of women being relegated to the background. Believe me, I have no problem calling myself a feminist.
Some men are victims of these atrocities too, I know this. But the brunt of this whole thing is mostly felt by women and girls. How many men are forced to marry as early as 13 years? How many men are forced to marry women old enough to be their grandmother? How many men are forced to dressed in a particular way not to entice the females? How many men are cheated out of their inheritance because of their gender? How many men get overlooked for promotion no matter how brilliant they are? How many men have to go through life holding back their true feelings just so they are not judged as difficult? How many men are denied leadership roles just not to upset the women? How many men sit back and let the women in their lives dictate their movements, thoughts, and behaviour for them? The list of comparisons is endless.
The statistics will show you that women are not being equally. So when those with strong voices speak up for them I have no problem. Whatever names they choose to call themselves. Just that we all get a fair chance of living our lives without prejudice.
Some countries even restrict women from moving freely without a man to chaperone them. Oh yes, recently, not in the 18th century. Unmarried women even more restricted. Who are the people making these rules? Men.
Women rights were given to us by God, not something for any man to administer. As children our parents guide our lives and taught us how to live. As adult everyone should be able to live as they choose. Men have the rights to live as they wish in their adulthood, but women are taught to defer to their male counterparts. When are women going to live on their terms, in the graves?
We all have to be open minded and do what we know is right. Tradition, culture, and religion are all good and there to guide and enrich our lives, but let us not forget to be humans first. Let us cherish everybody equally.
I am a feminist because I believe that all women should be allowed the same rights as men. All girls should be given same opportunities as boys. We should all be treated the same way.
Please, no matter what name we decide to call it, feminism, womanism, equalism, or humanism, let’s make sure that women and girls are treated like humans, not assistant-humans.
Stay with me,
Ruka
