Halloo,
Promoting what you do on social media is not for the faint-hearted!
If you are one of those oversensitive people who react every time something negative is said about them, then you are going to have a hard time controlling yourself while Marketing and Promoting your Business, especially, on social media.
The abuse you get online as a small business owner can be scary, so be prepared. You have to be able to take it to survive.
I am sure the same applies to all businesses but this is particularly important for Online Small Businesses.
Why?
Hmm! The fear of the Keyboard Warriors is the beginning of wisdom. By fear, I do not mean for you to run every time someone decides to attack you online. But for you to learn not to react to everything.
You see the so-called keyboard warriors mostly sit with their devices, with nothing to do but wait for someone to give them the time and attention they desperately crave. Social media gave most of these people opportunities to display their craziness.
It is important to read every comment. Negative or positive. Then decide if there is a sense in what is being said or it is a simple case of someone having a bad day and looking to pick on someone to battle with.
And who better to lash out at than a small business owner.
Remember, sometimes it is not about YOU! Some people are simply mannerless and rude. You want to pick a fight with such people? They have had years of practice, and they have loads of time to waste, you don’t. Or, do you?
I have come to the conclusion a long time ago that most of the hateful remarks are not really down to me, but due to whatever is going on in the other person’s life. Most of these people are emboldened by the fact that they are behind the screen and you don’t know them, and may never meet them.
I have a simple rule in tackling this.
Whenever someone attacks me online, especially on Social Media. I read the comment, see if the person is a client, which is rarely the case. Then I just leave it at first, I move on to more important stuff.
I will then come back later when the bite of such hateful comment is less painful and read again. Then I will make a decision to either completely ignore the person or respond. When I do decide to respond it will be to thank the person and try not to be rude, no matter how much I think they deserve it.
My not being rude is not out of cowardice, or that I am simply the most agreeable person ever. It is because I am representing my BUSINESS.
Some of my clients or potential clients might be reading or may stumble upon my comments in future. I want them to know that I am a level-headed person. I have class and good manners.
Just so you know we are talking about really hateful comments, those unnecessarily rude comments that just make you want to hurt the person right back. Let me give you some examples:
Someone wrote this comment on one of my post- Here we go again, another Nigerian Woman selling something. Can’t you people do something else. This came from a Nigerian man. Very strange!
Here is another from this Pro-Black Person, she attacked me online because of an article I wrote about Why some Natural Ingredients are great for Skin Lightening. Turn out she did not read the article, she only saw the headline and jumped to a conclusion. How very usual!
Another person typed- SCAM!. Turned out to be a racist with major issues. Here is how it all went down with this silly person.
This is my post:
This is the response:
Here is something I am guilty of – I hardly join groups that I can’t advertise my products. Now, some of these groups may not have rules against you putting up your business posts, some do. Sometimes I put up posts indirectly to advertise, and you have to be crafty about it.
A small business owner with limited resources has to be extra creative in getting people’s attention.
I became thick-skinned and can take some abuse, some well deserved, I admit. Remember, sometimes you have to break rules to make some impact and some people will be more than glad to point it out, rudely, to you.
If you are not as thick skinned then please read carefully the rules and regulations of Online Forums before posting there. Some of the Administrators can be extremely rude in telling you off.
So, please tell me, do you think you are still up for starting an online business?
If your answer is yes, then toughen up, because no matter how tough you are right now, prepare to meet some really nasty people who have nothing else to do than destroy others with their comments. A really thick skin is required.
Are you going to let them win?
I don’t think so. Develop thick skin then!!!!!!!!!!
