Halloo,
Let’s talk about one of the most dreaded ladies nightmares.
Yeah, that one!
The dreaded dark circles around the eye area. These circles are so stubborn, and the eye area is so delicate, getting rid of them is not very easy.
Okay, I know we all have our facial imperfections and hiding them seems the easiest option. But some are better treated than hidden, like the shadows under the eyes (that dark circle surrounding the eye area) This is a popular reason many ladies apply concealers. But it conceals, like the name suggests, not clear the imperfections.
Keeping it simple and natural is my motto in everything I do, especially when it comes to make-up. I am not a fan of a heavily made-up face. I wear the barest minimum and to be able to do that your skin needs to be healthy. With a little bit of effort, it is achievable
I have nothing against makeup, it is just not me.
If we can make the effort and treat our skin kindly our need for too much make-up will be greatly reduced, so will be the stress. Think about it- you’ll spend less time in the morning getting ready, you won’t have to keep dashing to the ladies to touch up every so often, no worries of clothes getting stained from the different colours on your face, and you can get into bed at night without the hassle of scraping make-up off your face.
Still in doubt? Read on, please.
If you really don’t want those dark circles, first you need to stop these habits:
- Not sleeping enough (Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep at night)
- Exposing your skin to the sun (Sun is good for you but use Moisturizers with good SPF)
- Not drinking enough water (Drink lots of water for great skin and good health)
- Bad diets (Get all the necessary vitamins and nutrients by eating a balanced diet)
- Rubbing eyes (Absolute no-no. Try to cure whatever is making you rub your eyes)
The above-mentioned habits are basically to prevent dark circles around the eyes, but how do you clear those you already have? My answer is to do it THE NATURAL WAY.
There are many amazing natural Ingredients you can use to clear dark shadows and other skin discolourations, here are some:
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet Almond Oil is a delicate oil with skin lightening properties.
Sweet Almond Oil contains a number of vitamins: A, B1, B2, B6 and E. Due to Sweet Almond’s properties this natural Moisturiser has a number of cosmetics benefits that are commonly known to nourish and moisturize the skin.
Almond Oil for Face relieves those who suffer from eczema.
Did you know that Almond Oil can also be used as a Natural Makeup removal? Yes, it will clean the skin and leave it soft and supple.
Gently use your index finger to dab Sweet Almond Oil around the eye area twice daily. The shadows will gradually fade. You really should read my article ‘Why I love Sweet Almond so much’
Citric Acid
Citric Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, a weak organic acid, which can rejuvenate skin to become more youthful and healthy. It has astringent and exfoliating properties. Citric Acid is great for brightening skin, shrinking pores, treating acne, and clear dark spots and fine lines. The effect of this beauty ingredient can be felt in masks, scrubs, toners, or soaps.

Turmeric Powder
Turmeric powder is a spice and an antioxidant, popular among the Southeast Asians for Skin Brightening. Get your hands on some and mix with yoghurt or buttermilk and apply to your eye area and you will see the dark circles slowly fade away.
Green Tea
Green Tea contains a huge amount of Vitamin C which helps in fighting many skin discolourations and helps to lighten the skin. Make a strong tea and dab your eye area twice a day.
Why not make an anti-ageing face cream with it? Check recipe here
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera Gel hydrates and heals skin. A good way is to mix Aloe Vera Gel with any of the other ingredients for amazing treatment of your eye area. If you can’t get the gel, Aloe Vera Juice is equally very effective.

Camwood Powder
Camwood Powder is an African herb that treats many skin problems, dark spot happens to be one of them. Camwood Powder comes from the heart or core of the Camwood tree, a tree of African origin. Camwood Powder cleansing power works on both face and the whole body, a natural herb for healthy skin.
Make a face mud by mixing Camwood Powder with Rosewater and use on the eye area twice daily. Check here for a full article on African Camwood Powder

Potatoes
Treating your skin with potatoes will stimulate collagen and elastin because potatoes contain many Vitamins and nutrients for making your skin glow. Grate peeled potatoes, mash them and apply to the affected area. A pinch of citric acid in this will kick it up a notch.
Cucumber
Cucumber, like the potatoes, is also full of nutrients and antioxidant necessary for skin lightening. To use on eye area, follow the same method as the potatoes or mix with the potatoes for a stronger power.
Lemon
Many swear by this, myself included, that application of the juice of the lemon to the dark areas works. Use by itself or mix with any of the other ingredients. Rich in Vitamin C, great for skin lightening. Do it gently though, the skin around the eye area is very delicate.
Castor Oil
Castor Oil is a natural rich emollient, with an amazing ability to penetrate the outer layer of the epidermis. It is suitable for protecting and conditioning skin and hair. A very popular body oil in natural beauty recipes. This oil softens and soothes dry and irritated skin and it helps to kill pathogens that can cause skin problems.
Dab Castor Oil around your eye area to lighten those dark circles around the eye area.
That is it!
You can mix two or more of these ingredients together or use one at a time to determine the potency and find the one that works best for you. There are so many more, just do a little bit of digging and you’ll uncover a world of treasures of ingredients for natural beauty.
