Halloo,

Natural or not, beautiful hair doesn’t just happen. You have to put in the work.

Consistency

Modern women are extremely busy, balancing a career with living a full life is time-consuming. So, when it comes to our hair it is important to get it right without investing too much time.

I, like most Black women, wear lots of wigs and hair extensions on my head. But I love my hair underneath to be healthy, and good to look at. if you have dry, flaky skin, chances are your hair is dry and flaky too. So, you need to take extra care.

Those with Oily hair and scalp are not to rest on their laurel, oily hair has its own challenges too.

Whatever hair type you may have. The following 20 simple tips will get you started on getting that beautiful healthy hair we all wished for.

1- DON’T FORGET TO LATHER UP

Keeping your hair clean will reduce split ends, and gives an overall clean and shiny look. Excessive shampooing can strip hair of its natural oils and dehydrate your scalp, so please not more than twice a week is best.

2- HOW ABOUT DRY SHAMPOO?

This particularly is for those with oily hair. Dry shampoos are great especially in the cold months of winter.

3- REMEMBER CONDITIONER

Your hair and scalp will be dry after shampooing, so it is important to apply a conditioner. The scalp needs to be healthy and hydrated for hair to grow. This can be achieved by conditioning.

4- MOISTURIZE

Whether your hair is treated or natural hair, moisturize very well, even if you’re not heat-styling your hair, you should comb through a protective product, this will reduce frizz, dryness, and split ends, and even protect your colour.

5- DANDRUFF BOTHERING YOU?

Looking natural way to get rid of Dandruff? Try rinsing your hair with water mix with Apple cider. 2-4 tablespoons of ACV in 8 ounces of water.

6- FOR THOSE IN COLD REGION

The Cold weather, especially during winter brings dry indoor heating, hot baths and showers. All these are damaging to hair, they dry out the scalp. Combat this by washing your hair in lukewarm water.

7- MASSAGE WITH NATURAL OILS

Hair and scalp need continuous nourishment and moisture. For strong hair and healthy hair please massage regularly with Carrier Oils. Check benefits of Wheatgerm Oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Rosehip Oil, Argan Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Rosemary Oil, Lavender Oil, and Ylang Ylang Oil.

8- DEEP, DEEP, DEEP CONDITION

Giving your hair and scalp a weekly dose of nutrients is crucial. This is best achieved with deep conditioning. There are many deep conditioning products in the market, so you are spoil for choice. I particularly love homemade deep conditioners. I just mix Olive Oil, Eggs, Honey, Lemon Juice, and Natural Yogurt. I drench my hair with the mixture, leave for 20 minutes and wash off with warm water.

9- EXFOLIATE PLEASE

Hair products, no matter how great they are, tend to clog up the scalp and hair.  A good practice is to exfoliate at least once a month. Let the scalp and hair breath. Get a good quality exfoliating hair shampoo or make one yourself.

10- STICK TO A ROUTINE

If you are lucky enough to find a combination of products and routine that works for you, don’t rock the boat by switching every time you hear of some other new products hitting the market. This is what is damaging many people’s hair.

11- ARE HOT TOOLS NECESSARY?

For some modern women, hot tools cannot be avoided. Can I just beg you to limit it though? The heat from the styling tools can damage hair so don’t forget use a good quality spray-in heat protection product. And please move the hair dryer around when using it, don’t keep it in one spot for a long time.

12- TRIM YOUR HAIR

For healthy hair, all year round don’t forget to snip and trim. No one looks nice with split ends.

13- COLOURING AGENTS

You do know that colouring agents strip scalp of natural oils, don’t you? Yes, it does. Just something to be aware off before getting your hair coloured.

14- AND THERE IS NATURE

So, before you beat yourself up into a pulp about why your hair is not growing like that of your friend, especially since you both followed the same hair care routine, please remember our hair quality depends on so many things like genetics, age, lifestyle and so on.

15- EAT WELL

When you eat the right combination of vitamins, proteins, and minerals in food to promote general wellbeing, you give your hair a fighting chance to grow. You can stimulate your hair follicles to produce long, glossy hair with volume by eating right. Plenty of Lean Red Meat, Chicken, Fish, Avocado, Sesame Seeds and Walnuts, and Raspberries.

16- TAKE SUPPLEMENTS

Eating the right combination of foods is easier said than done, the busy lifestyle we live makes it impossible to do. So the best solution is to supplement with vitamins: iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, biotin, and vitamin E.

17- YES, WITCH HAZEL

This is a natural solution for solving scalp problems. So, if you have a sensitive scalp or your scalp is irritated or inflamed, or you just want to fight dryness and dandruff. Get a bottle of Witch Hazel. Please don’t use for too long.

18- SILKY PILLOWS

If you are not a fan of rough, frizzy hair then get rid of your cotton pillowcases. Silky ones are perfect for keeping hair smooth.

19- SUN DAMAGES HAIR TOO

It is harder to tell that overexposure to sun and wind do damage hair too like it does to the skin. We need our vitamin D from sunshine but we need to find a way of getting it without damaging our hair and skin.  Always apply a leave-in conditioner when you are going to be exposed to the sun

20- CLEAN ACCESSORIES

Your hairbrushes and combs are a haven for different bacteria due to the build-up of styling products. Not cleaning these items regularly mean that you are transferring these bacteria to your hair and scalp every time you brush or comb your hair. Hair can’t thrive in that, to be honest, no one can.
