Halloo,

It may sound stupid but it is a question that really bothers me a lot.

I will like to ask all entrepreneurs this simple question ‘Are you networking for your business or you are doing business so that you can network?’

Noticed the difference? No? Really? Okay then,  let me break it down.

A person who is networking for business is out to grow the business using networking as one of the tools for growth. The other person owns a business to have a legitimate reason for networking.

Hope that helps?

Make no mistake about it- Networking is important for A Business to grow. But Entrepreneurs need to remember that Networking is for growth, so time is needed to carry out other activities apart from networking. Unless ones business is Networking.

The number of events that I hear some small business owners say they plan to attend or already attended is really huge, and worrying for me. I am amazed.

My question is ‘when do you get the time to do the actual business if you spend this much time going to one business events and another?’

I am a low energy person. I have to be super selective in my choices of engagements so I may not be the best judge of this. I hope other entrepreneurs will come out and help me out here. Please give me your take in the comments section below, thanks.

I know that I don’t even network enough. But still,  is there nothing called over-networking? there really should be. I mean there must be a ratio or percentage of time allocated to networking for business.

I took the pain to check the business website of a particular person I think is guilty of this.  And as I suspected it really needs lots of improvement. This person always complained of a lack of time to do some necessary work needed for business growth. But attends every named event around.

A conversation with this person reveals that he is aware things need to be improved business-wise, but he just needs to find time to do it. Please, are you screaming PRIORITY CHECK, as much as I did in my mind?

I had to bite my tongue and not give a lecture on how your primary concern is making sure that the people you want to serve are properly taken care of. This is the business. Every other action is to support this. A fact many small businesses conveniently forget and which impacts on growth.

I think each and every one of us should keep asking ourselves daily or weekly ‘Why am I in business?’ That will help us focus on the most important thing, and not easily lose focus on the end game.

Networking is to aid business, not the main business. Therefore the amount of time dedicated to this should reflect that. Unless your business is NETWORKING!

Strictly my opinion. What is yours?
