Halloo,
Starting a business, especially a small business, is all about having a good idea.
What then is a good idea? Phew!!!! That will take ages to answer. It is subjective too, what I consider good may be viewed as rubbish by another person.
But I am going to make it short by saying ‘All Ideas are Good Ideas’.
You just need to make sure that some people will be willing to pay for what your idea generates.
Having read many stories of successful entrepreneurs, I have concluded that the best ideas are those that come from trying to solve a personal problem. This way you can demonstrate to your target audience that you know what you are talking about. Read the stories of some popular Natural Skincare Start-Ups here.
Isn’t there a saying ‘Experience is the best Teacher’?
Some people are so fortunate, they know exactly where they are headed when starting their businesses and they just go for it. Some of us are not so lucky. When I started, my business idea was so broad that it takes a while to explain it to people.
I have always loved Mother Nature. So when I had trouble with my Skin and was looking for solutions, it was easy to turn to a completely Natural Skincare Routine. I spent ages researching and was amazed at the information I gathered and the result I and my family are enjoying from this decision.
I wanted to preach it to others and do everything to make it easy for them to make their own Skincare Products at home. That is as far as my idea went.
I had no idea what a huge task I was taking on with limited resources and time. I spent ages running around like a headless chicken. I had to take a career break.
I was Building my Website and adding contents, SEO, Blogging, Social Media, Marketing Natural Ingredients, Customer Service, Sales, Merchandising, Photography, Formulating Personalized Skincare Products, and many more. Believe me the list is endless.
It was a real challenge especially since I wasn’t making much money from all these activities.
The Logical thing will be to advise anybody who wants to start a business not to go the route I did. But, I think otherwise. If you have a clear vision of what you want to do, then, by all means, go for it. But if you aren’t clear about the best way forward then go my way. Let experience teach you what will hold your interest.

See, I could have spent ages trying to work out which of these activities to base my business and career on and still not make any decision or make a wrong decision. Because it is not always very clear from the beginning.
Once you have a business Idea and you are sure this idea really gets your blood pumping, Dive in, and go slow and steady. Learn as you go. Just make sure you are paying attention. You will discover where your strengths and interests lie.
The thing is many great ideas never left the idea table because of too much research. You gather so much information that you start to overwhelm yourself. Also, the fear of failure makes many people let good idea rots.
You need to get in there and work while learning and see how you are developing as a person. There are some parts of the business that will make you weary, and some parts will be an absolute joy, this is what will help you decide on the way to go.
Even if your first business idea doesn’t work, you will have hands on knowledge that will help you when you want to start a new business again.
Once you have decided on way to go in your chosen industry, then check yourself to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Also, make a list of the skills you need to succeed in this field and see if you have them or if you are willing to go train for them. Be brutal here, don’t lie to yourself, if a skill is important to the field don’t think you can wing it…. Decide on how you are going to tackle the issue.
My final say on this topic is to remember that sometimes what we want may not necessarily be the best for us, and just a little thinking, research, and talking to others may help save us from wasting time and resources.
Good luck!

Ruka
